Setting Up an Email Account in Mail

Follow these steps to set up your email account using the Mail app on OS X or newer macOS versions.


Adding a New Email Account

  1. Open Mail.

  2. From the Mail menu (top-left corner), select Preferences.

  3. In the Preferences window, go to the Accounts tab.

  4. Click the + (plus) button to add a new account.


Create a New Account

Account Information

  1. Enter your Full Name (this will appear as the sender on your emails).

  2. Enter your Email Address.

  3. Enter your Password for the email account.

  4. Click Next.


Incoming Mail Server Settings

  1. Account Type: Choose either:

    • IMAP (Recommended for multiple devices; keeps emails synced)

    • POP3 (Downloads and removes emails from the server)

  2. Description: Enter a name to identify this account.

  3. Incoming Mail Server: Use mail.example.com (replace example.com with your domain).

  4. Username: Enter your full email address.

  5. Password: Enter your email password.

  6. Click Next.


Outgoing Mail Server Settings

  1. Description: (Optional) Enter a name for the outgoing mail server.

  2. Outgoing Mail Server: Same as the incoming server: mail.example.com

  3. Check Use Authentication.

  4. Username: Enter your full email address.

  5. Password: Enter your email account password.

  6. Click Next.


Finish Setup

  1. Review the Account Summary page.

  2. Confirm all information is correct.

  3. Click Next to complete setup.

Mail is now configured and ready to send and receive emails.
