How to Set Up Outlook 2013: A Step-by-Step Guide

This guide will walk you through the process of setting up your email account on Outlook 2013 for Windows. While some steps might differ slightly depending on your version, this should generally apply to most users.


Step 1: Add a New Account

  1. Open Outlook 2013.

  2. Click the File tab on the top-left corner.

  3. Under the Info tab, click Add Account.


Step 2: Choose Account Type

  1. In the Add Account window, choose Manual setup or additional server types.

  2. Click Next.


Step 3: Choose Account Type

  1. Choose either POP or IMAP (POP downloads your emails to your computer, while IMAP syncs your email across multiple devices).

  2. Click Next.


Step 4: Enter Account Settings

  1. Your Name: Enter the name that you want to appear on your outbound email messages.

  2. Email Address: Enter your full email address (e.g., user@example.com).

  3. Account Type: Select either POP3 or IMAP, based on your provider.

  4. Incoming Mail Server: Enter the incoming server address (e.g., mail.example.com). Note: Replace "example.com" with your actual domain name.

  5. Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): This will be the same as your incoming mail server (e.g., mail.example.com).

  6. User Name: Enter your full email address again.

  7. Password: Enter your email password.


Step 5: More Settings

  1. Click the More Settings button to open additional options.


Step 6: Outgoing Server Settings

  1. Navigate to the Outgoing Server tab.

  2. Check the box for My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.

  3. Ensure that the option Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.


Step 7: Advanced Server Settings

  1. Now, go to the Advanced tab.

  2. For POP3 accounts:

    • If using SSL encryption, set the incoming port to 995.

    • If not using SSL, set the incoming port to 110.

  3. For IMAP accounts:

    • If using SSL encryption, set the incoming port to 993.

    • If not using SSL, set the incoming port to 143.

  4. Outgoing Server (SMTP):

    • If using SSL, set the outgoing port to 465.

    • If not using SSL, set the outgoing port to 26.


Step 8: Finish the Setup

  1. Click OK to save your settings.

  2. Click Next on the E-mail Accounts window to verify your account.

  3. Once the test is successful, click Finish to complete the setup.
